Short answer: pick by where you're sleeping. Staying around Namba? Take the Nankai rapi:t (34 minutes at the fastest). Heading to Shin-Osaka or Kyoto? Take the JR Haruka (about 50 and 75 minutes). Staying at a hotel near Osaka Station (Umeda), Shinsaibashi or Universal Studios Japan with big suitcases? The limousine bus drops you closer to the door, with no stairs or transfers.

Kansai International Airport (KIX) sits on an island in Osaka Bay, so every option starts with a ride across the bridge. Below are the three main choices, with journey times taken from Kansai Airport's own access page and from the operators themselves.

Nankai rapi:t: the quick way to Namba

The rapi:t is Nankai Electric Railway's airport limited express. It runs between Kansai-Airport Station and Nankai Namba Station, in the south of central Osaka, close to Dotonbori and Shinsaibashi. Nankai gives the fastest run as 34 minutes. Kansai Airport's access page lists about 34 minutes for the rapi:t α and about 39 minutes for the rapi:t β, which makes a few more stops.

Good to know before you ride:

You can buy a rapi:t ticket in advance through Klook: Nankai rapi:t ticket (Kansai Airport to Namba) on Klook (affiliate link). On Klook at the time of writing it was rated 4.8 (80.8K reviews), with 3M+ booked, from US$9.25. Prices vary by date and option.

JR Haruka: best for Shin-Osaka and Kyoto

The Haruka is JR West's airport limited express. It's the one to take for Kyoto, and for Shin-Osaka if you're catching a shinkansen straight away. Kansai Airport's access page gives these approximate times for the Haruka:

If you'd rather not pay the limited express charge, JR's Kansai Airport Rapid Service is the slower, no-frills alternative. The airport lists it at about 45 minutes to Tennoji and about 65 minutes to Osaka Station. It's an ordinary commuter train, so expect luggage to be a squeeze at busy times.

The JR Kansai Area Pass covers the Haruka. If you're using that pass anyway, the airport ride is a good way to get value from it. Otherwise, a single ticket is simpler: JR Haruka ticket on Klook (affiliate link). On Klook at the time of writing it was rated 4.8 (47.0K reviews), with 2M+ booked, from US$7.70. Prices vary by destination and option.

For trains around the city after you arrive, an ICOCA or any other IC card works on JR, subways and private railways. See our IC card guide.

Limousine bus: door-to-door-ish with luggage

Kansai Airport Transportation Enterprise runs the airport limousine buses from both Terminal 1 and Terminal 2. You put your suitcase in the hold, sit down, and get off at a big station or right outside certain hotels. Here's what the operator's timetable pages show at the time of writing (October 2026):

Round-trip tickets valid for 14 days are also sold on these routes (for example ¥3,300 adult for Osaka Station, Shinsaibashi or USJ, and ¥5,100 for Kyoto). Road traffic can make the bus slower than the times above, so leave a buffer on the way back to the airport.

Heading to the park? Our Universal Studios Japan tickets guide covers entry and Express Passes. To book the bus ahead: Kansai Airport limousine bus on Klook (affiliate link). On Klook at the time of writing it was rated 4.8 (8.0K reviews), with 500K+ booked, from US$8.05. Prices vary by route.

Landing late? What to check

If your flight lands late in the evening, immigration and baggage claim can take a while. A few practical points:

The flight home: send your bags ahead

On your last day, the same options work in reverse. But dragging suitcases through Kyoto or Namba on a sightseeing day is no fun. A luggage delivery service picks your bags up at your Osaka or Kyoto hotel and has them waiting at KIX, so you can travel to the airport light. Our luggage forwarding guide explains how it works and how far ahead to book.

One bookable option: luggage delivery between Osaka/Kyoto hotels and Kansai Airport on Klook (affiliate link). On Klook at the time of writing it was rated 4.9 (1.9K reviews), with 60K+ booked, from US$14.89. Prices vary by number of bags and option.

Which one should you book?

Match the train to your hotel, not the other way round. Namba means rapi:t. Kyoto or Shin-Osaka means Haruka. A hotel that's a stop on the limousine bus route, or a family with big bags heading for USJ, means the bus. Any of them gets you there in about an hour or so.

Once you've arrived, see Getting Around Kyoto and Osaka for buses, subways and day passes, and Kyoto and Osaka sightseeing bookings for the tickets worth reserving in advance.
