Kyoto and Osaka Sightseeing: Tickets and Tours Worth Booking Ahead

Short answer: in Kyoto, book the Sagano Romantic Train and teamLab Biovortex Kyoto before you go, because both can sell out. The Hozugawa river boat pairs perfectly with the train for a half day in Arashiyama. In Osaka, the Osaka Amazing Pass pays off if you'll visit several of its included sights in one day. Kaiyukan aquarium is easier with a pre-booked time, and the Umeda Sky Building can usually be decided on the day.

This is the Kansai version of our Tokyo sightseeing bookings guide. Ratings, booking counts and prices below are what Klook showed at the time of writing. Prices are "from" prices and change by date and option.

Kyoto: the Arashiyama combo (Sagano train + Hozugawa boat)

This is the classic Arashiyama half day. You ride the Sagano Romantic Train out through the Hozu Gorge to Kameoka, then come back down the same river by Hozugawa boat, ending in Arashiyama.

Sagano Romantic Train

A slow scenic train running from Torokko Saga Station, through Torokko Arashiyama and Torokko Hozukyo, to Torokko Kameoka. The operator describes it as about a 25-minute ride along the gorge.

Hozugawa river boat

A boat ride down about 16 km of the Hozu River, from Kameoka to Arashiyama. It takes about two hours.

See times on Hozugawa River Boat Ride on Klook (affiliate link). There's no combined discount for the train and boat, so you book them separately. For trains from Kyoto Station to Saga-Arashiyama, see our guide to getting around Kyoto and Osaka.

Kyoto: teamLab, Gion and a day tour

teamLab Biovortex Kyoto

A permanent teamLab digital art museum that opened on 7 October 2025. It's about a 7-minute walk from Kyoto Station's Hachijo East Gate, so it's easy to fit in on arrival or departure day, or on a rainy afternoon. Opening hours are 9:00 to 21:00 with last entry at 19:30 at the time of writing.

Gion walking tour

Gion is lovely to wander on your own, but a guide explains what you're actually looking at and keeps you on the right side of local rules. Kyoto's official tourism site asks visitors not to stop, touch, follow, or take unauthorized photos or videos of geiko, and not to block the street while taking photos. The Gion small-group walking tour on Klook is rated 4.9 from 1.3K reviews, with 10K+ booked at the time of writing.

Kyoto & Nara day tour (if you're short on time)

If you only have one day for Kyoto and Nara, a tour saves you working out the connections. The most-booked one on Klook leaves from Osaka or Kyoto, and its listing includes the Sagano train, Nara Park, Fushimi Inari and Arashiyama. It's rated 4.9 from 10.9K reviews, with 100K+ booked at the time of writing.

Osaka: Amazing Pass, Kaiyukan and Umeda Sky

Osaka Amazing Pass: who it pays off for

The pass combines a day of trains and buses with free entry to about 40 sights. At the time of writing, the official price is ¥3,500 for 1 day and ¥5,000 for 2 consecutive days. It covers Osaka Metro, Osaka City Bus (some routes excluded) and the New Tram, plus Hankyu, Hanshin, Keihan, Kintetsu and Nankai trains mainly within Osaka City. JR lines are not on its list. A "day" runs from 3:00 a.m. to 2:59 a.m., and each included sight can be entered once.

Osaka Aquarium Kaiyukan

One of the largest aquariums in the world, built around a huge Pacific Ocean tank with a whale shark. It's about a 5-minute walk from exit 1 of Osakako Station on the Osaka Metro Chuo Line.

Umeda Sky Building (Kuchu Teien Observatory)

The observatory links the building's two towers on the 39th and 40th floors and the roof, which is an open-air 360-degree deck. It's open 9:30 to 22:30 (last entry 22:00) at the time of writing, and the rooftop may close in heavy rain. It's walkable from JR Osaka Station and the Umeda stations.
